Description

The Social Share Buttons & Analytics Plugin – GetSocial.io plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'response' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The injected payload is stored in the gs-alert-msg, gs-alert-utm, and gs-alert-cta WordPress options and executes in an administrator's browser when the GetSocial settings page is visited.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the GetSocial.io WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'response' parameter. The payload is stored in WordPress options and executes when an administrator views the plugin's settings page.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the GetSocial.io plugin versions up to 4.5. Inspect WordPress options gs-alert-msg, gs-alert-utm, and gs-alert-cta for suspicious scripts. Review admin access logs for unexpected script executions on settings pages.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive data like cookies or session tokens, perform actions on your behalf, or deface your website. Since the payload executes in an administrator's browser, it could lead to full site compromise if the admin has high privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information if the site handles such data, leading to compliance breaches and potential fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the GetSocial.io plugin to the latest version. Remove any unauthorized scripts from gs-alert-msg, gs-alert-utm, and gs-alert-cta options. Restrict subscriber-level access to prevent further exploitation.
