Description

The Awesome Support – WordPress HelpDesk & Support Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'wpas_files' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 6.4.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with custom-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable when the "Enable drag-n-drop uploader for ticket form" setting is enabled, as it is disabled by default.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Awesome Support – WordPress HelpDesk & Support Plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with custom-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'wpas_files' parameter. The scripts execute when users access an infected page. Exploitation requires the 'Enable drag-n-drop uploader for ticket form' setting to be enabled, which is off by default.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Awesome Support plugin is installed and verify its version. If it is version 6.4.1 or lower, the vulnerability may be present. Inspect WordPress pages for injected scripts, particularly in areas where the 'wpas_files' parameter is used. Enable logging to monitor for unauthorized script injections or unusual file uploads.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. Since it requires authentication, only users with custom-level access or higher can exploit it. The impact includes potential data breaches, loss of trust, and unauthorized actions on the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information if exploited on healthcare-related sites. Compliance risks include fines, legal action, and reputational damage due to potential data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Awesome Support plugin to the latest version immediately. Disable the 'Enable drag-n-drop uploader for ticket form' setting if enabled. Review and sanitize all user inputs, especially file uploads. Implement strict input validation and output escaping for all plugin parameters.
