Description

The AnyComment plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'email' parameter in versions up to, and including, 0.3.6. This is due to insufficient input sanitization on the public /wp-json/anycomment/v1/subscribe REST endpoint and missing output escaping in AnyCommentSubscriptionsTable::column_default(), which returns the stored email verbatim into an HTML <td> when the subscription's user_ID does not resolve to an existing WP_User. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever an administrator accesses the AnyComment β†’ Subscriptions admin page.

Executive Summary

The AnyComment WordPress plugin up to version 0.3.6 has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts via the email parameter in the /wp-json/anycomment/v1/subscribe REST endpoint. The plugin fails to properly sanitize input and escapes output, allowing the injected script to execute when an administrator views the AnyComment Subscriptions page.

Detection Guidance

Check for the AnyComment plugin version 0.3.6 or lower in your WordPress installation. Inspect the /wp-json/anycomment/v1/subscribe REST endpoint for improper input sanitization in the email parameter. Look for stored XSS payloads in the AnyComment β†’ Subscriptions admin page.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to run malicious scripts in your browser when you access the AnyComment Subscriptions page. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or unauthorized actions on your WordPress site. Attackers may also deface your site or redirect users to malicious sites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, leading to potential fines or penalties for non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the AnyComment plugin to the latest version. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin immediately. Review the Subscriptions page for suspicious entries and remove any unauthorized scripts. Implement input validation and output escaping for the email parameter.
