Description

The Media Library Assistant plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'search-string' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.42 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. Exploitation requires the targeted site to have a publicly accessible page containing an [mla_gallery] shortcode configured with a pagination output mode and an mla_link_href template that reflects a {+request:...+} token, along with enough attachments to trigger pagination.

Executive Summary

The Media Library Assistant plugin for WordPress has a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 3.42. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'search-string' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages if they trick users into clicking a link. Exploitation requires specific plugin configurations and pagination settings.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Media Library Assistant plugin versions up to 3.42 in WordPress. Look for pages with [mla_gallery] shortcode using pagination and mla_link_href reflecting {+request:...+} tokens. Inspect search-string parameter handling in plugin files.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary web scripts in your browser if you visit a compromised page. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. Attackers might also perform actions on your behalf without your consent.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited on healthcare-related sites. Both regulations require protection against such attacks to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Media Library Assistant plugin to the latest version. If update is unavailable, disable the plugin or remove the vulnerable [mla_gallery] shortcode configurations. Implement input sanitization for search-string parameters.
