Description

The Wp Social Login and Register Social Counter plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Authentication Bypass in all versions up to, and including, 3.2.2. This is due to the social login REST callback registered at `/wp-json/wslu-social-login/type/{provider}/` with `permission_callback => __return_true` locating an existing WordPress account solely by the email string returned from the OAuth provider and calling `wp_set_auth_cookie()` without a password check, while the only verification guard β€” `!empty($getProfile->emailVerified)` in `inc/admin-create-user.php` β€” is a no-op for the bundled Hybridauth Facebook and Twitter adapters, both of which assign the raw email string rather than a boolean verified flag to `emailVerified`. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to obtain a fully authenticated session as any existing WordPress user, including Administrators, whose registered email address can be presented through a configured Facebook or Twitter login on the target site. Exploitation requires only that the attacker control an OAuth account whose provider-returned email matches the target account's registered WordPress email address; no local credentials, nonce, or prior foothold is needed.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass authentication by exploiting a flaw in the social login REST callback. The plugin checks for an existing WordPress account only by email address returned from OAuth providers like Facebook or Twitter. Since the verification for email verification is ineffective in these providers, attackers can log in as any user, including administrators, by matching the target's email address through a controlled OAuth account.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the Wp Social Login and Register Social Counter plugin version 3.2.2 or lower. Look for unauthorized sessions or login attempts via social OAuth providers like Facebook or Twitter. Review logs for REST API calls to /wp-json/wslu-social-login/type/{provider}/.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to gain full administrative access to your WordPress site without needing credentials. They can take over accounts, modify site content, install malware, steal data, or completely compromise the site. The attack requires only that the attacker control an OAuth account with an email matching a registered WordPress user.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. A breach may result in legal penalties, loss of compliance certifications, and reputational damage due to unauthorized exposure or theft of personal health or user information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Wp Social Login and Register Social Counter plugin to the latest version. Disable the plugin if no update is available. Monitor for suspicious login activity and revoke unauthorized sessions. Consider implementing additional authentication methods for critical accounts.
