Reflected Cross-Site Scripting in User Frontend WordPress Plugin

Description

The User Frontend – Membership, User Registration, User Profile, User Directory & Content Restriction with Frontend Post Submission plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'field_attr[required]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.3.13 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. The nonce check on the wpuf_get_child_cat AJAX action is not an effective security barrier because the wpuf_nonce value is publicly localized to every anonymous visitor of any page containing a WPUF shortcode, making it freely harvestable by an unauthenticated attacker.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin has a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the 'field_attr[required]' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages that execute if a user clicks a crafted link. The nonce check is ineffective because the nonce value is publicly exposed to all visitors.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the User Frontend plugin up to version 4.3.13. Check for suspicious scripts in the 'field_attr[required]' parameter. Review server logs for unusual requests targeting this parameter. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for XSS vulnerabilities.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could steal user sessions, perform actions on your behalf, or deface your website. Users visiting infected pages may have their data compromised or be redirected to malicious sites without their knowledge.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is exposed due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the User Frontend plugin to the latest version beyond 4.3.13. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily. Implement a web application firewall to block XSS attempts. Review and sanitize user inputs in forms.
