Description

Appium is a cross-platform automation framework for all kinds of apps, built on top of the W3C WebDriver protocol. Prior to 7.2.6, @appium/support ZIP extraction accepts an archive entry that creates a symbolic link to a location outside the extraction directory and then accepts a later regular-file entry whose legitimate name resolves through that link. The lexical containment check examines entry names without validating the symlink target or the real destination, so an attacker-controlled archive can write files to arbitrary locations writable by the Appium process. This is distinct from the earlier parent-directory entry-name traversal fixed in 7.0.6 because the bypass uses no parent-directory or absolute entry name. Depending on the writable destination, the arbitrary file write can overwrite configuration, startup scripts, or executables and lead to code execution. This issue is fixed in version 7.2.6.

Executive Summary

This is a Zip Slip vulnerability in Appium's ZIP extraction process. It allows attackers to create symlinks in a ZIP file that point outside the intended extraction directory. The extraction process only checks entry names lexically and does not validate symlink targets, enabling files to be written to arbitrary locations writable by the Appium process. This can lead to overwriting configuration files, scripts, or executables and potentially result in code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Appium version is below 7.2.6. Run: npm list @appium/support. If the version is <=7.2.5, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, monitor for unexpected file writes or symlink creation in extraction directories.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to write malicious files to sensitive locations on your system where Appium has write permissions. This might include overwriting configuration files, startup scripts, or executables, which could lead to arbitrary code execution, system compromise, or unauthorized access to data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized file writes or code execution through crafted ZIP files. Arbitrary file writes may lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to Appium version 7.2.6 or later immediately. Run: npm update @appium/support. If upgrading is not possible, avoid processing untrusted ZIP files and restrict write permissions in extraction directories.
