Description

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 4.5.15. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to view the entire Redux options payload β€” including plaintext password field values, API keys, license keys, and SMTP credentials β€” exposed in the inline redux_<opt_name> JavaScript block on wp-admin/profile.php. The Users extension is loaded automatically for every Redux instance registered by any installed theme or plugin, meaning any site running Redux Framework is affected regardless of whether the developer explicitly configured the Users extension.

Executive Summary

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress has an authorization bypass vulnerability in versions up to 4.5.15. It allows authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher to view sensitive data like passwords, API keys, and SMTP credentials exposed in the JavaScript block on wp-admin/profile.php. The issue occurs because the plugin fails to properly verify user authorization before displaying this data.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Redux Framework plugin is installed and its version is up to 4.5.15. Inspect wp-admin/profile.php for exposed redux_<opt_name> JavaScript blocks containing sensitive data like passwords or API keys. Look for unauthorized access to user profiles or unusual data exposure in the admin panel.

Impact Analysis

Attackers with subscriber-level access could steal sensitive credentials such as passwords, API keys, license keys, and SMTP settings. This could lead to unauthorized access to systems, data breaches, or further exploitation of the WordPress site or connected services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences if such data is exposed.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Redux Framework plugin to the latest version beyond 4.5.15. Remove or disable the plugin if not essential. Restrict subscriber-level access to sensitive areas and audit user permissions. Monitor for unauthorized data access or privilege escalation attempts.
