Incorrect Authorization in MongoDB Server Sharded Cluster Router

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-104005, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-13

Last updated on: 2026-10-15

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

A security issue was discovered in MongoDB mongos (the sharded cluster router) where an authenticated user with readWrite privileges could crash the mongos process by crafting a specially formed aggregation pipeline. The issue leverages an internal aggregation stage that lacks proper authorization checks despite being intended for internal use, allowing a subsequent stage to be forced to execute on the router under conditions it was not designed to handle. This results in an unhandled fatal error that causes the mongos process to immediately abort, resulting in denial of service for all clients routed through the affected mongos instance.

CWE ID Description
CWE-863 The product performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action, but it does not correctly perform the check.
CWE-617 The product contains an assert() or similar statement that can be triggered by an attacker, which leads to an application exit or other behavior that is more severe than necessary.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in MongoDB mongos allows an authenticated user with readWrite privileges to crash the mongos process by sending a specially crafted aggregation pipeline. The issue involves an internal aggregation stage that bypasses authorization checks, forcing a subsequent stage to execute on the router in an unintended way. This triggers an unhandled error, causing the mongos process to abort and denying service to all clients using that instance.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for unexpected crashes in mongos processes or by analyzing aggregation pipelines for unauthorized stages. Check MongoDB logs for fatal errors in mongos instances and review user queries involving aggregation pipelines. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can lead to a denial of service for all users connected to the affected mongos instance. This means your database operations may fail, applications relying on MongoDB may become unresponsive, and data access could be disrupted until the mongos process is restarted.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service by crashing the mongos process, disrupting database operations for all clients. Such disruptions could lead to unavailability of critical data, potentially violating compliance requirements for availability in standards like GDPR (data processing integrity) and HIPAA (system availability for protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest MongoDB security patch immediately to address the aggregation pipeline authorization flaw. Restrict readWrite privileges to only necessary users and monitor mongos processes for unexpected crashes.
