Integer Overflow in Scribus Leading to Heap Overflow via TIFF Loader

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-104064, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-30

Last updated on: 2026-10-30

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

Scribus before 1.6.7 contains an integer overflow vulnerability in the scimgdataloader_tiff TIFF loader that allows attackers to trigger a heap overflow via crafted tile dimensions. Attackers can supply a tiled TIFF with large tile width, height and sample values for a user to import, corrupting heap memory to crash Scribus or execute code.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

Scribus before version 1.6.7 has an integer overflow flaw in the TIFF image loader (scimgdataloader_tiff). When processing a crafted TIFF file with unusually large tile dimensions, the program miscalculates memory requirements, leading to a heap overflow. This can crash Scribus or allow arbitrary code execution if the malicious file is opened by a user.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the installed version of Scribus. Use commands like 'scribus --version' or inspect package managers (e.g., 'dpkg -l scribus' for Debian-based systems) to verify if the version is below 1.6.7.

Impact Analysis

If you open a specially crafted TIFF file in vulnerable Scribus versions, the program may crash or malicious code could run on your system. This could lead to data loss, unauthorized access, or further compromise of your device depending on the attacker's goals.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Scribus to version 1.6.7 or later. Avoid importing untrusted TIFF files, especially those with large tile dimensions, until the update is applied.
