Description

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. In FileRise 3.22.0, the /api/file/saveFile.php operation accepts dot and dot-dot segments in its attacker-controlled folder input before ACL inheritance evaluates the uncanonicalized string. With an authenticated non-administrator session, a valid CSRF token, and inherited edit permission on a legitimate ancestor, the local filesystem or WebDAV adapter later resolves those segments as path navigation, permitting attacker-controlled file creation outside the authorized folder and, where backend credentials permit, outside the configured WebDAV root. Local storage also created directories before final containment validation and used a prefix comparison that accepted similarly named sibling roots. This issue is fixed in version 3.23.0.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

FileRise 3.22.0 has a path traversal vulnerability in the /api/file/saveFile.php endpoint. It allows authenticated non-admin users with edit permissions to create files outside the intended folder by using dot segments (../) in the folder input. The system fails to properly validate paths before applying access controls, enabling unauthorized file operations.

Detection Guidance

Check FileRise version for 3.22.0 or earlier. Inspect file operations for unauthorized path traversal attempts in logs. Review WebDAV or local storage paths for unexpected directory creation outside authorized folders.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to write files to arbitrary locations on the server, potentially overwriting system files, installing malware, or gaining elevated privileges. If WebDAV credentials allow access beyond the configured root, files could be created outside the intended storage area.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized file access or modification, violating data integrity and confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in non-compliance due to insufficient access controls and potential data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FileRise to version 3.23.0 or later. Restrict non-administrator user permissions. Validate and sanitize all folder inputs to prevent path traversal. Review and audit file creation logs for suspicious activity.
