Publication date: 2026-10-06

Last updated on: 2026-10-13

Assigner: Gitea Limited

Description

Gitea validated the initial remote URL for push mirrors, wiki remote checks, and fetches of migrated pull request heads, but the subsequent raw Git operations followed HTTP redirects without revalidating the destination. A repository administrator using a policy-allowed endpoint that redirects could make Gitea's Git client send requests to an address that the outbound host policy would otherwise block. The impact depends on the configured policy and the internal services reachable from the server.

Executive Summary

Gitea initially validates the remote URL for operations like push mirrors and wiki checks, but later Git operations follow HTTP redirects without rechecking the destination. This allows a repository admin to use a policy-allowed endpoint that redirects to a blocked address, bypassing outbound host policies.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves Gitea not revalidating HTTP redirects during Git operations, potentially bypassing outbound host policies. To detect it, monitor network traffic for unexpected redirects from Gitea to internal or external addresses during Git operations. Check Gitea logs for unusual repository fetch or push mirror activities involving HTTP redirects.

Impact Analysis

The impact depends on your Gitea server's configured policies and internal services. An attacker with repository admin access could redirect Git operations to unauthorized internal systems, potentially accessing sensitive data or services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Compliance risks depend on the data exposed.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Gitea to the latest version to address the redirect validation issue. Review and restrict outbound host policies to prevent unauthorized connections. Monitor network traffic for unexpected redirects from repository operations.
