Description

The Membership & User Roles for WooCommerce (Automatic Role Changer) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in versions up to, and including, 20260828. This is due to the `maybe_add_role_to_user()` function unconditionally re-assigning every role stored in the `dfxwcrc_foreign_roles` user meta cache without verifying that each cached role is still actively assigned by the external provider β€” a condition made permanent by `remember_foreign_roles()`, which merges new foreign roles into the cache but never evicts roles that have since been revoked. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access and above to restore a previously revoked Administrator role to their own account, gaining full administrative control of the site, by triggering any role-assignment event such as completing a purchase for a role-mapped product. Exploitation requires Replace Roles mode to be enabled and the attacker's account to have previously received Administrator legitimately through a separate role-management mechanism while the plugin was active, so that `administrator` was written into the `dfxwcrc_foreign_roles` user meta cache before the external provider revoked it.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher to regain an Administrator role they previously had. The plugin caches role assignments in user metadata without checking if those roles were later revoked by external systems. Attackers can trigger a role-assignment event, like completing a purchase, to restore their admin privileges and take full control of the website.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress user meta cache for the dfxwcrc_foreign_roles field containing administrator role entries. Inspect plugin settings for Replace Roles mode and review user role changes after purchases or role-mapping events.

Impact Analysis

If you use this plugin, attackers could gain full administrative access to your WordPress site. This allows them to install malicious plugins, steal data, deface your site, or take it offline. The attack requires the attacker to have had admin access previously and the plugin's 'Replace Roles' mode enabled.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized administrative access, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR or HIPAA. If attackers gain admin access, they may exfiltrate sensitive user data, leading to compliance breaches, regulatory fines, or legal consequences for affected organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Membership & User Roles for WooCommerce plugin to the latest version to patch the vulnerability. Disable the plugin if an update is not available. Review user roles and remove any unauthorized Administrator role assignments. Check the dfxwcrc_foreign_roles user meta cache for suspicious entries and clean them up.
