NDIS Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-105007, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-13

Last updated on: 2026-10-16

Assigner: Microsoft Corporation

Description

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) when ndis.sys fails to check the length of a buffer prior to copying memory to it. To exploit the vulnerability, in a local attack scenario, an attacker could run a specially crafted application to elevate the attacker's privilege level. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run processes in an elevated context. However, an attacker must first gain access to the local system with the ability to execute a malicious application in order to exploit this vulnerability. The security update addresses the vulnerability by changing how ndis.sys validates buffer length.

Executive Summary

This is an elevation of privilege vulnerability in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) component ndis.sys. It occurs because ndis.sys fails to validate the length of a buffer before copying memory to it. An attacker with local system access could exploit this by running a specially crafted application to elevate their privilege level and execute processes in an elevated context.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires local access to exploit and cannot be detected remotely. Focus on monitoring for unusual privilege escalation attempts or suspicious processes running with elevated permissions. Check system logs for unexpected changes in user privileges or ndis.sys-related errors.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to gain higher privileges on your system, enabling them to run malicious processes with elevated permissions. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further compromise of your system. However, the attacker must already have local access and the ability to execute a malicious application to exploit it.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Apply the latest security updates from Microsoft to address the buffer validation issue in ndis.sys.
  • Restrict local user permissions to minimize the risk of malicious applications being executed.
  • Monitor for any signs of privilege escalation or unauthorized system changes.
