Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a mass assignment flaw in the EnergizeLab Eilik NestJS auth service. It allows a registered user to manipulate account update requests by setting another user's identifier, effectively taking over that account.

Detection Guidance

Check application logs for unusual account update requests where user IDs are modified by non-admin users. Inspect API traffic for mass assignment patterns in PUT or PATCH requests to account endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to another user's account, leading to data theft, privilege escalation, or impersonation. This could result in loss of sensitive information or control over affected accounts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement strict input validation to prevent mass assignment. Ensure user IDs in account update requests are validated against the authenticated user's permissions. Review and restrict API endpoints to prevent unauthorized modifications.
