Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Pixel Tag Manager for WooCommerce WordPress plugin before version 2.2.3. The flaw occurs because the plugin does not perform a capability check in an AJAX action, exposing the nonce to any user with admin dashboard access. This allows users with roles as low as Contributor to modify the plugin's tracking configuration and inject arbitrary JavaScript that executes in the browsers of all site visitors, including administrators.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Pixel Tag Manager for WooCommerce plugin. If it is below 2.2.3, the system is vulnerable. Log in as a user with admin dashboard access and inspect AJAX requests for exposed nonces or unauthorized configuration changes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with Contributor-level access or higher could exploit this to inject malicious JavaScript into your website. This could lead to theft of user data, session hijacking, defacement of your site, or spreading malware to visitors. All site visitors, including administrators, could be affected as the injected script runs in their browsers.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches by allowing attackers to steal user data or session tokens, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it could expose protected health information if the site handles such data. Non-compliance fines or legal actions may result if the breach affects user privacy or data security.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Pixel Tag Manager for WooCommerce plugin to version 2.2.3 or later immediately. Remove or restrict access for users with Contributor role or lower until the update is applied. Monitor site behavior for unexpected JavaScript execution or configuration changes.
