Description

RT's automatic link creation for URLs in HTML ticket content does not HTML-escape the URL it places in the link. A URL crafted to break out of the link's address can add a script that runs when the ticket history is displayed, with no further action by the viewer. Anyone who can add HTML content to a ticket can plant it. That includes an unauthenticated sender of HTML email to any queue that grants CreateTicket or ReplyToTicket to Everyone, which is routine for a queue that accepts mail from the public. The script runs in the session of any user who views the ticket, and can act in RT with that user's authority. This issue was fixed in versionΒ 5.0.11 and 6.0.4

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves RT's automatic link creation for URLs in HTML ticket content. It fails to escape the URL properly, allowing a crafted URL to break out of the link's address and inject a script. This script executes when the ticket history is viewed, with the attacker needing only the ability to add HTML content to a ticket. The script runs in the session of any user viewing the ticket, potentially acting with the viewer's permissions.

Impact Analysis

If you use RT and can add HTML content to tickets, an attacker could exploit this to run malicious scripts in your browser when viewing ticket history. This could lead to unauthorized actions being performed on your behalf, such as data theft or account manipulation. Unauthenticated users may also exploit this if the ticket queue allows public creation or replies.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. If exploited, it may result in non-compliance due to unauthorized data exposure or actions performed by attackers using stolen session credentials.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade RT to version 5.0.11 or 6.0.4 or later to address the vulnerability.
