Description

Kiota is an OpenAPI based HTTP Client code generator. From 1.25.1 until 1.35.0, Kiota copies x-ai-capabilities.response_semantics.oauth_card_path from an attacker-controlled or compromised OpenAPI description into a generated API plugin manifest without validating that the value is a safe package-relative file reference. Parent-directory traversal, rooted paths, or absolute URIs can therefore reach a consuming host that resolves the reference, allowing the host to cross the intended plugin-package boundary or use an unintended authentication card. Kiota does not itself read a local file or execute code merely while generating the manifest, and impact requires downstream resolution of the unsafe reference. This issue is fixed in version 1.35.0.

CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

Kiota is a code generator for HTTP clients based on OpenAPI. Between versions 1.25.1 and 1.35.0, it copies a specific field from OpenAPI descriptions into a generated plugin manifest without validating the value. This allows path traversal or absolute URIs to be included, potentially breaking the plugin package boundary or misusing authentication cards.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves unsafe file path handling in Kiota-generated API plugin manifests. Detection requires checking generated manifests for x-ai-capabilities.response_semantics.oauth_card_path values containing parent-directory traversal, rooted paths, or absolute URIs. Inspect manifest files for suspicious paths like ../ or /etc/ or C:\.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could craft an OpenAPI description to include malicious paths or URIs. If the generated manifest is used, the host might resolve these unsafe references, leading to unintended access or authentication bypass. Impact depends on how the manifest is processed downstream.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially affect compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized access or data exposure through manipulated OpenAPI descriptions. If exploited, it may lead to improper authentication flows or unintended data access, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Kiota to version 1.35.0 or later to address the vulnerability. Review and regenerate all API plugin manifests using the patched version. Remove any previously generated manifests containing unsafe path references.
