Description

libmikmod before 3.3.14 contains an integer overflow vulnerability in DSM_Load() in load_dsm.c that allows attackers to trigger heap buffer overflow via crafted track counts. Attackers can supply a DSM module whose numchn and numpat product wraps a 16-bit value, overwriting heap memory to cause crashes or potential code execution.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

libmikmod before version 3.3.14 has an integer overflow flaw in the DSM_Load() function. Attackers can exploit this by providing a DSM module with track counts that cause a 16-bit value to wrap around. This leads to a heap buffer overflow, potentially crashing the application or allowing arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to libmikmod versions before 3.3.14. To detect it, check the installed version of libmikmod on your system using commands like 'dpkg -l libmikmod' on Debian-based systems or 'rpm -qa | grep libmikmod' on RPM-based systems. If the version is below 3.3.14, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you use libmikmod in your software, an attacker could exploit this to crash your application or execute malicious code on your system. This is especially risky if the software processes untrusted DSM modules, as it may lead to system compromise or data loss.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution or data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may risk protected health information exposure. Organizations must patch to maintain compliance and avoid penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libmikmod to version 3.3.14 or later. On Debian-based systems, use 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade libmikmod'. On RPM-based systems, use 'sudo yum update libmikmod' or 'sudo dnf upgrade libmikmod'. If official packages are unavailable, download and compile the latest version from the official libmikmod source repository.
