Description

Out-of-bounds read in the QAuthenticator NTLM authentication handling in the Qt Network module in Qt Group Qt allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information (heap memory contents) or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted NTLM challenge sent by a malicious server or proxy, when an application using QNetworkAccessManager or QTcpSocket authenticates with NTLM.

Executive Summary

This is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in Qt's QAuthenticator NTLM authentication handling. It occurs when an application using QNetworkAccessManager or QTcpSocket authenticates with NTLM and receives a crafted challenge from a malicious server or proxy. The flaw allows remote attackers to read sensitive heap memory contents or crash the application.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for crashes in applications using Qt's QNetworkAccessManager or QTcpSocket with NTLM authentication. Check application logs for segmentation faults or heap corruption errors. Network traffic analysis may reveal malformed NTLM challenge responses.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes potential exposure of sensitive data stored in memory and denial of service through application crashes. If exploited, attackers could access confidential information processed by the vulnerable application, such as credentials or other secrets.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's confidentiality requirements. Organizations using affected Qt applications may face compliance violations if sensitive data is leaked due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Qt to the latest patched version. Disable NTLM authentication in Qt applications if possible. Use alternative authentication methods like Kerberos. Monitor network traffic for suspicious NTLM challenge patterns.
