Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the ActiveTrail for WooCommerce WordPress plugin versions before 1.2.7. It allows unauthenticated attackers to create arbitrary coupons, including 100%-off and free-shipping coupons, due to a missing authorization check in the plugin.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your ActiveTrail for WooCommerce plugin version is prior to 1.2.7. You can verify the installed version via WordPress admin panel or by inspecting the plugin files. Look for unauthorized coupon creation attempts in WooCommerce logs or server access logs.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could exploit this to create coupons that reduce product prices to zero or eliminate shipping costs, potentially leading to financial losses for the store owner. It may also allow attackers to manipulate store promotions or deceive customers.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized creation of coupons, potentially allowing attackers to manipulate pricing or shipping costs. This may result in financial losses or unauthorized discounts, which could impact data integrity and financial reporting. For GDPR, unauthorized access or changes to transaction data could violate principles of integrity and confidentiality. For HIPAA, if coupon data involves protected health information transactions, unauthorized modifications could compromise compliance with safeguarding requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the ActiveTrail for WooCommerce plugin to version 1.2.7 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update is applied. Review all existing coupons for unauthorized changes and monitor for suspicious activity.
