Executive Summary

This is a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Fonts component of Google Chrome versions before 155.0.8059.39. A remote attacker who already compromised the renderer process could exploit this by tricking a user into visiting a specially crafted HTML page. This could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code outside Chrome's sandbox, potentially gaining control over the affected system.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 155.0.8059.39. To detect it, check your Chrome version by running chrome://version/ in the browser. If your version is below 155.0.8059.39, the system is vulnerable. Update Chrome immediately to the latest version to mitigate the risk.

Impact Analysis

If you use an affected version of Chrome, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to run malicious code on your computer. This might lead to data theft, installation of malware, or complete system compromise. The attacker would need to first compromise the Chrome renderer process, which is why it's rated as Medium severity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it pertains to a buffer overflow in Google Chrome's Fonts component. Compliance impacts would depend on how the vulnerability is exploited in a specific environment, such as unauthorized data access or code execution, which could lead to violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 155.0.8059.39 or later to address the buffer overflow vulnerability in Fonts.
