Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in OpenSSH before version 10.6. It involves a lack of validation when decompressing highly compressed data during SSH communication. The issue occurs in the sshd and ssh components, where the maximum packet length is not checked, potentially allowing maliciously crafted compressed data to exceed expected limits.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking the OpenSSH version on your system. If it is below 10.6, the system is vulnerable. Use the command 'sshd -V' or 'ssh -V' to check the version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause a denial of service by crashing the SSH service or consuming excessive resources. It may also allow unauthorized data modification or information disclosure if combined with other vulnerabilities, though the CVSS score suggests limited impact.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized data modification or access due to insufficient input validation during decompression in OpenSSH. Exploitation may lead to integrity or availability issues, which are critical for maintaining secure data handling required by these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OpenSSH to version 10.6 or later to address the decompression packet length vulnerability.
