Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an insecure permissions issue in the CardProvider content provider of the AnyMemo Android app. It allows unauthorized apps to read flashcards from the user's memorization database without needing any permissions. The flaw exists because the content provider is exported and accessible via a specific URI authority, enabling attackers to query and extract flashcard data including questions, answers, and deck names.

Detection Guidance

Check if the AnyMemo app (package org.liberty.android.fantastischmemo) is installed on your Android device. Use the command 'adb shell dumpsys package org.liberty.android.fantastischmemo | grep CardProvider' to verify if the CardProvider content provider is exported. If it is, the vulnerability may exist.

Impact Analysis

If you use AnyMemo, an attacker could exploit this flaw to steal your flashcard data, including sensitive or personal information stored in your decks. The attacker only needs to have another app installed on your device that queries the vulnerable content provider. No user interaction or permissions are required, making this a stealthy and high-risk issue.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA if sensitive personal data stored in flashcards is exposed. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A data breach via this flaw could result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of user trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Uninstall the AnyMemo app until an official patch is released. Avoid using the app to store sensitive flashcard data. Monitor for updates from the developer or F-Droid for a fixed version.
