Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows an attacker to access sensitive database details like usernames and passwords by sending a specific DWR request with a workflow rule. It can be combined with an authentication bypass to read database contents without authentication. Write and delete operations may also be possible but were not confirmed.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for unauthorized DWR requests containing workflow rule parameters. Inspect HTTP POST requests to endpoints like /dwr/ for suspicious payloads attempting to access database details. Check server logs for unusual database read operations without prior authentication.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive data such as usernames and passwords, leading to unauthorized access to the database. This could result in data breaches, loss of confidential information, and potential system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access and potential data breaches. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement strict access controls to prevent unauthorized DWR requests. Disable or restrict workflow rule access to sensitive database operations. Apply patches or updates if available from the vendor.
