Executive Summary

This is a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Drupal MathJax module. It occurs due to improper neutralization of user input during web page generation, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages viewed by other users.

Detection Guidance

To detect this XSS vulnerability in Drupal MathJax: LaTeX, inspect Drupal sites running versions 0.0.0 to 4.1.2. Check for user-supplied input rendered without proper sanitization in MathJax output. Manual review of page source or using browser developer tools to inspect rendered HTML for suspicious scripts is recommended.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user session cookies, perform actions on behalf of users, or deface websites. Users of affected Drupal sites running vulnerable versions of MathJax could have their browsers compromised.

Compliance Impact

XSS vulnerabilities can lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences if such vulnerabilities are exploited to expose sensitive user information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Drupal MathJax: LaTeX to the latest version beyond 4.1.2. If updating is not possible, disable the module or restrict access to untrusted users. Apply input validation and output encoding to sanitize user-provided LaTeX or MathJax content.
