Executive Summary

This is an unauthenticated Local File Inclusion (LFI) vulnerability in the Ultimate Multisite WordPress plugin before version 2.17.2. The plugin fails to validate user input in the 'attributes' parameter, allowing attackers to include and read arbitrary local files on the server, including sensitive files like the WordPress configuration file.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the Ultimate Multisite WordPress plugin is installed and verify its version. If the version is below 2.17.2, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files directly.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive files on your server, such as the WordPress configuration file, which may contain database credentials and other critical information. This could lead to further compromise of your WordPress site or server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR (if personal data is exposed) or HIPAA (if protected health information is compromised). Non-compliance with these regulations may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Ultimate Multisite plugin to version 2.17.2 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is applied. Monitor for suspicious activity or unauthorized file access.
