Description

The Ultimate Member – User Profile, Registration, Login, Member Directory, Content Restriction & Membership Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'user_url' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.14.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation requires a visitor to click the attacker's Website URL link on their public Ultimate Member profile, a condition that is trivially met since the redirect-confirmation onclick handler is enabled by default on all new installations.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Ultimate Member WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'user_url' parameter. The flaw exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 2.14.0.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by reviewing WordPress sites using the Ultimate Member plugin versions up to 2.14.0. Check for suspicious scripts in user profile pages, particularly in the 'user_url' parameter. Inspect pages where the Website URL link is present and verify if any injected scripts execute when clicked.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject scripts that execute when users visit an infected profile page. This could lead to theft of cookies, session hijacking, or redirection to malicious sites. Users must click the attacker's Website URL link on the profile, which is enabled by default on new installations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations if user data is compromised through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Ultimate Member plugin to the latest version beyond 2.14.0. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access to untrusted users. Monitor user profiles for unexpected scripts in the 'user_url' field. Consider disabling the redirect-confirmation onclick handler if not required.
