Description

The Events Made Easy plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'event[location_name]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.2.22 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable when both the guest event submission feature (eme_fs[guest_submit]) and forced location creation (eme_fs[force_location_creation]) are explicitly enabled by a site administrator, as both settings default to off.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Events Made Easy WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the event[location_name] parameter. The issue occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 3.2.22. Exploitation requires two specific settings to be enabled by the site administrator: guest event submission and forced location creation.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Events Made Easy plugin is installed and verify its version. If it is version 3.2.22 or lower, the vulnerability may exist. Inspect WordPress admin settings for guest event submission and forced location creation features, as both must be enabled for exploitation.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. When users access these infected pages, the malicious scripts execute in their browsers. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. It may also enable attackers to perform actions on behalf of users or deface the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, exposing personal or sensitive user data. For GDPR, it may result in violations of data protection principles, leading to fines or penalties. For HIPAA, it could compromise protected health information, violating compliance requirements and risking legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Events Made Easy plugin to the latest version to apply the security fixes. If an update is not available, disable guest event submission and forced location creation features in the plugin settings until a patch is applied.
