Description

The Hustle – Email Marketing, Lead Generation, Optins, Popups plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'content[title]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 7.8.14.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with custom-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that an administrator has explicitly granted the 'Create and Update Modules' (hustle_create / hustle_edit_module) capability to the attacker's role via the plugin's own Settings β†’ Permissions feature; this delegation is not enabled by default.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Hustle WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with custom-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'content[title]' parameter. The scripts execute when users visit an affected page. Exploitation requires the attacker's role to have specific permissions granted via the plugin's Settings β†’ Permissions feature, which is not enabled by default.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress installations for the Hustle plugin versions up to 7.8.14.3. Check for unauthorized script injections in the 'content[title]' parameter via database queries or file scans. Review user roles with 'Create and Update Modules' permissions.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. It may also enable phishing attacks by injecting fake login forms. Users with access to the affected site could unknowingly execute malicious scripts, compromising their data or account security.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information if exploited. Both regulations mandate strict controls to prevent unauthorized data access or modification, which this vulnerability undermines.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Hustle plugin to the latest version beyond 7.8.14.3. Remove or restrict 'Create and Update Modules' permissions for non-trusted roles. Scan for and remove any injected scripts in plugin settings or database entries.
