Description

The Gallery Custom Links plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'display_name (profile.php) + comment (wp-comments-post.php)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.3.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit requires two coordinated inputs from the same authenticated attacker: an HTML comment payload stored in a comment body (preserved verbatim by WordPress comment kses) and a matching simple_html_dom noise key placed in the attacker's display_name (which survives esc_attr() intact), with substitution occurring after both filters have run during the plugin's default-on output-buffering pass over the full rendered page.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Gallery Custom Links WordPress plugin up to version 2.3.3. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into web pages. The attack requires two inputs: a comment payload stored in a comment body and a matching key in the attacker's display name. The plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape these inputs, allowing the scripts to execute when users view the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Gallery Custom Links plugin version 2.3.3 or lower in WordPress. Inspect user display names and comments for suspicious HTML/script content. Use WordPress admin panel to review comments and user profiles for unexpected payloads.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect users to malicious sites. It may also enable phishing attacks or spread malware. Users with access to the site could have their interactions monitored or data compromised. The impact depends on the attacker's goals and the site's user base.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA by exposing user data or enabling unauthorized access to sensitive information. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. A successful exploit may result in data breaches, triggering regulatory penalties, fines, or legal consequences for affected organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Gallery Custom Links plugin to the latest version. Remove or sanitize any user display names containing scripts. Review and clean comments for malicious payloads. Consider disabling the plugin temporarily if an update is unavailable.
