CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is an unauthenticated SQL injection vulnerability in Channel Software WebAlliance eCommerce. It exists in the sUserID parameter of the GetUser method in the SOAP /preapproval.asmx endpoint. Improper input validation allows attackers to inject malicious SQL commands, potentially accessing sensitive data or executing system commands on the backend Microsoft SQL Server.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor for unusual SOAP requests to /preapproval.asmx with crafted sUserID parameters containing single quotes or SQL injection payloads like WAITFOR DELAY. Check for syntax errors or delayed responses in logs. Use network traffic analysis tools to inspect SOAP requests for malicious payloads.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could read, write, or execute commands on the backend database. This may lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information like user PII or passwords. If the database user has admin rights, attackers could execute system commands or upload malicious files.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or exposure of sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately apply patches or updates from Channel Software to fix the SQL injection flaw. If patches are unavailable, restrict access to /preapproval.asmx via firewall rules or disable the SOAP endpoint. Implement input validation to sanitize sUserID parameters and disable stacked queries in Microsoft SQL Server.
