Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

** UNSUPPORTED WHEN ASSIGNED ** Exposure of sensitive system information to an unauthorized control sphere vulnerability in Apache Cocoon. An unauthenticated user could gain access to diagnostic interfaces, including triggering of cache, exposure of (verbose) debug logging and profile information. This issue affects Apache Cocoon: all versions. As this project is retired, we do not plan to release a version that fixes this issue. Users are recommended to find an alternative or restrict access to the instance to trusted users. NOTE: This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated users to access diagnostic interfaces in Apache Cocoon, exposing sensitive system information like cache details, debug logs, and profile data. The issue affects all versions of Apache Cocoon, which is no longer supported.

Detection Guidance

Since Apache Cocoon is unsupported and no longer maintained, detection relies on identifying exposed diagnostic interfaces or debug logging endpoints. Check for open ports or paths like /cocoon/, /samples/, or /WEB-INF/debug/ that may expose sensitive information. Use network scanning tools like nmap to identify Apache Cocoon instances and verify if debug or cache interfaces are accessible.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gather internal system details, potentially leading to further attacks. Since Apache Cocoon is retired, no fixes will be released, so users should either switch to alternatives or restrict access to trusted users only.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict access to the Apache Cocoon instance to trusted users only. Disable or block external access to diagnostic interfaces, debug logging, and cache endpoints. Consider migrating to an alternative solution as the project is retired and no fixes will be provided.
