Description

Open5GS through 2.8.0 contains a reachable assertion vulnerability in mme_gn_handle_sgsn_context_request() that allows remote unauthenticated attackers to crash the MME via malformed SGSN Address IEs. Attackers sending GTPv1-C traffic from a configured SGSN address with a known UE IMSI or P-TMSI can supply an invalid address length to terminate open5gs-mmed, denying service to all subscribers.

Executive Summary

Open5GS through version 2.8.0 has a flaw in the mme_gn_handle_sgsn_context_request() function where a malformed SGSN Address Information Element (IE) can trigger a reachable assertion. This allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash the Mobility Management Entity (MME) by sending specially crafted GTPv1-C traffic. The attack requires a configured SGSN address with a known UE IMSI or P-TMSI and an invalid address length to terminate the open5gs-mmed process, disrupting service for all subscribers.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor for crashes in the open5gs-mmed process, especially after receiving GTPv1-C traffic on port 2123. Check logs for assertion failures or malformed SGSN Address IEs in SGSN Context Request messages. Use network traffic analysis tools like Wireshark to inspect GTPv1-C packets for invalid address lengths in SGSN Address IEs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause a denial of service for all mobile subscribers connected to the affected Open5GS MME. The crash of open5gs-mmed terminates service, preventing legitimate users from making calls, sending messages, or accessing data. Since it is remotely exploitable without authentication, attackers can disrupt network operations without needing direct access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes denial-of-service by crashing the MME, disrupting service for all subscribers. For GDPR, this could impact availability of subscriber data processing. For HIPAA, it may disrupt critical healthcare communications. Compliance requires ensuring service continuity and data protection, which this vulnerability undermines.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Open5GS to a version later than 2.8.0 to address the reachable assertion vulnerability in mme_gn_handle_sgsn_context_request().
