Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows an attacker with high privileges to inject reserved Apache configuration directives during domain creation in koozali's SME Server version 11.0rc1-215. This corrupts the httpd.conf file, preventing Apache from starting after a server reboot and causing a denial-of-service (DoS) condition for the web server and its hosted virtual hosts.

Detection Guidance

Check if Apache fails to start after a reboot, which may indicate corrupted httpd.conf due to injected directives. Inspect httpd.conf for unexpected reserved Apache configuration entries. Review domain creation logs for unauthorized modifications.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can disrupt your web server and all hosted websites, making them inaccessible. It requires high-privilege access, so only authorized users or compromised accounts with elevated permissions could trigger this issue.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial-of-service (DoS) condition by corrupting Apache configuration files, preventing the web server from starting. This could disrupt access to critical services, potentially violating compliance requirements for availability under standards like GDPR and HIPAA, which mandate reliable access to personal and health data.

Mitigation Strategies

Restrict high-privilege user access to domain creation functions. Review and remove any injected Apache directives in httpd.conf. Update SME Server to a patched version if available. Monitor Apache service status after reboots.
