Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows an administrator to retrieve password reset codes for any user account through an API. The API exposes these codes in its output, enabling an admin to reset passwords and take over other accounts. The vulnerability is limited to administrative access.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking API responses from the Hitachi Vantara Remote Ops Agent for exposed password reset codes. Review logs for administrative API calls that return sensitive reset tokens. Ensure no unauthorized users have administrative access to the application.

Impact Analysis

If you are an administrator, an attacker with admin access could compromise credentials of other accounts. This could lead to unauthorized access to user accounts, data breaches, or misuse of application functions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could allow an attacker with administrative access to reset passwords for other accounts, potentially leading to unauthorized access to user credentials. This may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (patient data security) by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict administrative API access to only necessary personnel. Remove password reset codes from API responses. Audit all administrative accounts for unauthorized access. Update the Hitachi Vantara Remote Ops Agent to a patched version if available.
