Description

Indico is a feature-rich event management system. Indico 3.3.3 through 3.3.13 incorrectly uses the ambient web-session user instead of the user supplied to Contribution.can_manage when checking inherited event contribution-management permission. A low-privileged user can induce a privileged user to request a crafted legacy contribution export and cause speaker or author email addresses and contribution access-control entries to be stored in an API cache entry retrievable with less privilege. This issue was fixed in Indico 3.3.14.

Executive Summary

Indico versions 3.3.3 through 3.3.13 have a flaw where they use the wrong user context when checking permissions for managing event contributions. A low-privileged user can trick a privileged user into requesting a specially crafted export, causing sensitive data like email addresses and access-control entries to be stored in a cache that can later be accessed with lower privileges.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow unauthorized access to sensitive information such as speaker or author email addresses and contribution management details. This could lead to data leaks or unauthorized changes in event settings, depending on the privileges of the exploited account.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized exposure of personal data, which may violate GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting sensitive information. Organizations using affected Indico versions risk non-compliance and potential regulatory penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Indico to version 3.3.14 or later to address the permission issue. Review API cache entries for unauthorized access to sensitive data like email addresses and access-control entries.
