Description

The WP Directory Kit plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'idfield' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.6.0 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The WP Directory Kit plugin for WordPress has a SQL Injection vulnerability in versions up to 1.6.0. The 'idfield' parameter does not properly escape user input, allowing attackers to inject malicious SQL queries. This can lead to unauthorized data extraction from the database.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking if the WP Directory Kit plugin version 1.6.0 or below is installed. Look for suspicious SQL query patterns in server logs, especially those involving the 'idfield' parameter. Use tools like grep to search for POST or GET requests containing 'idfield' in your web server logs.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could exploit this to access sensitive database information, such as user credentials, personal data, or other confidential details. This could lead to data breaches, privacy violations, or further attacks on the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could result in unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP Directory Kit plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is released. Review database access logs for unusual queries and restrict database user permissions to limit potential damage.
