Description

The Anti-Spam by CleanTalk – Spam Protection Without CAPTCHA plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'user_email' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 6.89.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation requires user registration to be open on the site, and script execution is triggered when an Administrator subsequently runs the plugin's user-spam scan and views the resulting Non-checkable users or Spam users tab β€” the plugin's own documented workflow.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Anti-Spam by CleanTalk plugin for WordPress. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'user_email' parameter. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages. Exploitation requires open user registration on the site. The attack triggers when an Administrator runs the plugin's user-spam scan and views the Non-checkable users or Spam users tab.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized scripts in user profiles or spam scan results. Review plugin logs for suspicious user_email parameter values. Inspect WordPress database for injected scripts in user records.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into your WordPress site. If exploited, it could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or defacement of your website. Administrators viewing the plugin's spam scan results could unknowingly trigger the malicious scripts, potentially compromising user data or site integrity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, which may violate GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. If user data is compromised due to the XSS attack, it could result in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive information, triggering regulatory penalties or legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Anti-Spam by CleanTalk plugin to the latest version. Disable user registration if not required. Review and remove any suspicious user accounts. Implement additional input validation for user_email parameter.
