Description

The Meta Box – A Framework for Dynamic Websites plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'profile_background[<attacker-chosen key>]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.15.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitability depends on a consuming plugin or theme built on Meta Box that exposes the background field to lower-privileged users and renders stored values via the rwmb_the_value()/format_single_value() pattern; the effective minimum privilege is whatever role that consumer permits, demonstrated at Subscriber level.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Meta Box WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'profile_background' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The vulnerability exists in versions up to 5.15.2.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Meta Box plugin versions up to 5.15.2. Inspect stored data in the profile_background parameter for unexpected or malicious scripts. Review user roles with subscriber access or higher for unauthorized modifications.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts into pages that execute when users access them. This could lead to unauthorized actions on behalf of users, data theft, or defacement of the website. The impact depends on the privileges of the user accessing the injected page.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, which may violate GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection and user privacy. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance risks if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Meta Box plugin to the latest patched version. Implement strict input validation for the background field. Restrict lower-privileged user roles from modifying background properties unless absolutely necessary.
