Description

The Meow Lightbox plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'post_content (bbPress reply body)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.6.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the administrator to have enabled Output Buffering, the HtmlDomParser engine, and Aggressive Resolve, as well as a stored-HTML submission surface (such as bbPress anonymous replies) whose kses allow-list preserves img attributes; given these preconditions, a one-shot unauthenticated submission can execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of any user who views the affected page.

Executive Summary

The Meow Lightbox WordPress plugin up to version 5.6.4 has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It occurs because user input in bbPress reply bodies is not properly sanitized or escaped before being stored and displayed. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when other users view the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Meow Lightbox plugin versions up to 5.6.4. Inspect bbPress reply bodies for stored scripts in post_content. Enable WordPress debugging to log suspicious script injections. Review server access logs for unusual POST requests targeting bbPress or Lightbox endpoints.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could inject arbitrary JavaScript into pages. If a user views an infected page, the script runs in their browser, potentially stealing cookies, session tokens, or sensitive data. This could lead to account takeover or defacement of the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information, risking compliance with safeguard rules. Both standards require protecting against such exploits.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Meow Lightbox plugin to the latest version. Disable Output Buffering, HtmlDomParser engine, and Aggressive Resolve in plugin settings. Review bbPress settings to restrict anonymous HTML submissions. Implement a web application firewall to block XSS payloads.
