Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) flaw in conductor-oss conductor up to version 3.33.0-rc10. It exists in the KafkaPublishTask.start function of the file kafka/src/main/java/com/netflix/conductor/contribs/tasks/kafka/KafkaPublishTask.java. The issue arises when the kafka_request.bootStrapServers argument is manipulated, allowing an attacker to forge server-side requests.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves server-side request forgery in conductor-oss conductor up to version 3.33.0-rc10. To detect it, inspect network traffic for unusual outbound requests from the KafkaPublishTask.start function. Check if the kafka_request.bootStrapServers parameter is being manipulated to redirect requests to unintended servers. Review logs for any unauthorized or unexpected connections to Kafka brokers.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can be exploited remotely, meaning attackers can send crafted requests to internal systems without direct access. It may lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, internal network scanning, or further attacks on connected services. The public availability of an exploit increases the risk of real-world attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability enables server-side request forgery (SSRF) via manipulated kafka_request.bootStrapServers, allowing remote attackers to send unauthorized requests. Such unauthorized access could lead to data exfiltration or manipulation, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's integrity and confidentiality requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade conductor-oss conductor to a version beyond 3.33.0-rc10 to address the server-side request forgery flaw in KafkaPublishTask.start. Apply patches immediately as exploit code is publicly available.
