Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a missing authorization flaw in the Online Appointment Booking System. It exists in the changebookingstatus.php file where the submit2 handler updates appointment statuses without verifying user permissions. An attacker can remotely exploit this by sending a crafted POST request with username[], timestamp[], and status[] arrays to modify any appointment status without authentication.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized POST requests to changebookingstatus.php with arrays like username[], timestamp[], and status[]. Monitor database logs for unexpected status updates. Use network traffic analysis tools like Wireshark to inspect HTTP POST requests targeting this file.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthorized users to change appointment statuses, potentially causing confusion, missed appointments, or scheduling conflicts. Patients might miss appointments, doctors could be unaware of changes, and managers may lose track of bookings. The exploit could disrupt the entire booking system workflow and lead to data corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthorized users to modify appointment statuses without authentication, potentially leading to unauthorized access or alteration of sensitive patient data. This could violate GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements and HIPAA's access controls and audit requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict access to changebookingstatus.php by implementing authentication and role-based checks. Update the file to validate user permissions before processing requests. Consider disabling the file temporarily if a patch is unavailable.
