Description

The AI Marketing Expert β€” AI Email Marketing, AI Content Generator, SEO Analyzer, AI Workflow Automation, Social Media & Ai Chatbot plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.2.8 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires only that the chatbot module is active with at least one configured bot; the attacker stores the payload via three unauthenticated REST calls, and the JavaScript widget auto-poll then delivers it to any administrator who opens wp-admin/index.php.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in the AI Marketing Expert WordPress plugin up to version 1.2.8. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'name' parameter. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when an administrator views the WordPress admin dashboard. Exploitation requires the chatbot module to be active with at least one configured bot.

Detection Guidance

Check for active chatbot modules in the AI Marketing Expert plugin. Inspect wp-admin/index.php for unexpected scripts. Review REST API calls for unauthenticated interactions. Look for suspicious payloads in the 'name' parameter of plugin functions.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can steal sensitive admin session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the admin, or deface the website. Since the payload is stored and delivered via the chatbot widget, any administrator accessing wp-admin/index.php could trigger the malicious script without needing to click a link.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, triggering compliance violations and potential fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the AI Marketing Expert plugin to the latest version beyond 1.2.8. Disable the chatbot module if not in use. Implement input sanitization for the 'name' parameter. Monitor wp-admin/index.php for unauthorized script injections.
