Description

The FV Flowplayer Video Player plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment (shortcode attribute 'align')' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 7.5.55.7212 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the plugin's 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' (parse_comments) setting to be enabled by an administrator, which causes the plugin to register do_shortcode on the comment_text filter, allowing attacker-supplied shortcode attributes stored in comments to be rendered unescaped to all subsequent visitors.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the FV Flowplayer Video Player WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'comment' parameter in shortcode attributes like 'align'. The scripts execute when users view pages with injected comments. The plugin must have the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' setting enabled for this to work.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the FV Flowplayer Video Player plugin version 7.5.55.7212 or below. Inspect comments for malicious shortcode attributes like 'align' with script payloads. Enable plugin debug logs to monitor shortcode parsing in comments.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or deface your website. Visitors may have their data compromised if they interact with the injected scripts. The vulnerability requires minimal user interaction beyond viewing a page with a malicious comment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. If exploited, it may result in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive information, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the FV Flowplayer Video Player plugin to the latest version. Disable the 'Parse Vimeo and YouTube links' setting in the plugin. Review and remove suspicious comments containing shortcode attributes. Implement a web application firewall to block XSS attempts.
