Description

The Mang Board plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'align' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Because the payload contains no angle brackets, wp_kses_post leaves the shortcode intact on save, allowing the malicious attribute value to survive post submission and fire in any viewer's browser β€” including an administrator previewing a pending post.

Executive Summary

The Mang Board WordPress plugin has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 2.4.5. The flaw is in the 'align' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users view the affected pages, including administrators previewing drafts.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Mang Board plugin version 2.4.5 or lower. Check for malicious scripts in the 'align' parameter of posts or pages. Use WordPress admin tools to review pending posts for unexpected web scripts. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, perform actions on behalf of users, or deface your website. Since the payload bypasses wp_kses_post, the malicious code persists even after saving posts. This could affect all visitors, including administrators, leading to potential data breaches or loss of trust in your site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. A successful exploit may result in data breaches, triggering compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage for organizations handling sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Mang Board plugin to the latest version beyond 2.4.5. Remove any suspicious scripts from posts or pages. Restrict contributor-level access to untrusted users. Monitor for unauthorized changes or new posts containing malicious payloads.
