Executive Summary

This is a DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Adobe Experience Manager. An attacker can manipulate the DOM to execute malicious JavaScript in a victim's browser. The victim must visit a specially crafted webpage for exploitation to occur.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this DOM-based XSS vulnerability typically involves inspecting web application code for unsafe DOM manipulations. Use browser developer tools to monitor JavaScript execution and DOM changes. Look for user-controlled input being inserted into the DOM without proper sanitization. Check for suspicious JavaScript functions like innerHTML, document.write, or eval that process untrusted data.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive data like session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of the user. It may also lead to unauthorized access to user accounts or data if exploited successfully.

Compliance Impact

This DOM-based XSS vulnerability could potentially lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements if personal data is compromised. For HIPAA, if the affected system processes protected health information, exploitation could result in breaches of confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Adobe for Adobe Experience Manager. Implement input validation and output encoding to prevent malicious JavaScript execution. Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict inline scripts and external resource loading. Regularly audit web applications for DOM-based XSS patterns and educate users about avoiding untrusted links.
