Executive Summary

ThriveX-Server through version 4.0 has a missing authorization vulnerability in the GET /api/article and /api/article/{id} endpoints. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to access unpublished draft articles or soft-deleted articles by either requesting sequential article IDs or using query parameters like isDraft=true or isDel=true. Attackers can retrieve full titles, descriptions, and content of non-public articles.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized access to unpublished or deleted articles by testing endpoints with query parameters like isDraft=true or isDel=true. Use tools like curl to send requests to /api/article and /api/article/{id} endpoints and inspect responses for non-public content.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow unauthorized individuals to read sensitive or confidential article content that was meant to be private. If the articles contain proprietary, personal, or sensitive data, attackers could misuse this information for espionage, blackmail, or public disclosure. It undermines data confidentiality and could lead to reputational damage or legal consequences for affected organizations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates data protection regulations such as GDPR and HIPAA by exposing personal or sensitive data without authorization. GDPR requires strict access controls and protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. A breach like this could result in regulatory fines, legal penalties, and loss of trust from customers or patients.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest patch for ThriveX-Server 4.0 to fix the missing authorization issue. If a patch is unavailable, restrict access to the /api/article endpoints by implementing proper authentication and authorization checks.
