Description

The Newsmatic theme for WordPress is vulnerable to blind SQL Injection via the 'slug' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.5.0 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a blind SQL injection in the Newsmatic WordPress theme up to version 1.5.0. It occurs because the 'slug' parameter is not properly escaped and SQL queries are not prepared correctly. Attackers can inject malicious SQL code to extract sensitive database information without authentication.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Newsmatic theme for unusual database queries or errors. Check server logs for SQL errors or suspicious requests targeting the 'slug' parameter. Use tools like WPScan to scan for vulnerable versions.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could access sensitive data stored in the WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential content. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or further exploitation of the compromised system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could result in unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to non-compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Newsmatic theme to the latest version beyond 1.5.0. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the theme temporarily. Apply input validation and output encoding to sanitize the 'slug' parameter in all requests.
