Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

MP Manager through 1.1.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows attackers to write files outside the extraction folder by bypassing the non-recursive sanitizeEntryName filter. Attackers can craft TAR, 7z or RAR entries named ....//file that become ../file, creating or overwriting files anywhere the app can write on shared storage.

Executive Summary

This is a path traversal vulnerability in MP Manager through version 1.1.0. It allows attackers to bypass the non-recursive sanitizeEntryName filter and write files outside the intended extraction folder. Attackers craft malicious archive entries like ....//file which become ../file after sanitization, enabling file creation or overwriting anywhere the app can write on shared storage.

Detection Guidance

Check for MP Manager version 1.1.0 or earlier. Inspect archive extraction logs for suspicious file paths containing traversal sequences like ....// or ../. Manually review extracted files for unexpected locations outside the intended directory.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could overwrite system files, install malware, or steal sensitive data by tricking you into extracting a specially crafted archive. The attack requires user interaction (opening the archive and selecting extract) and is limited to the app's writable storage scope.

Mitigation Strategies

Update MP Manager to the latest version beyond 1.1.0. Avoid opening archives from untrusted sources. Restrict application write permissions to minimize impact if exploitation occurs.
